Add a domain

Adding a domain makes Velumi the authoritative DNS provider for it. You do this once per domain. The wizard walks you through three steps and — importantly — imports your existing DNS for you so nothing breaks when you switch over.

Only organization Owners and Admins can add or remove domains.

1. Enter your domain

From the dashboard, open Domains and click Add domain. Enter the domain you own — the apex (also called the root), for example example.com, not www.example.com or app.example.com.

2. Review your imported DNS

As soon as you add the domain, Velumi scans its current live DNS and imports the records it finds — your email (MX), existing websites, verification records, and so on. This happens before you change anything at your registrar, so there's no window where records are missing.

The wizard shows you everything it imported. Take a moment to check it over:

Email (MX) records — the most important thing to confirm. If you receive email on this domain, make sure those records are present.
Other subdomains pointing at services not hosted on Velumi.
TXT records for SPF, DKIM, and domain verification.

The scan finds most records, but it can't see everything — some record types aren't discoverable. If you know of a record that isn't listed, add it now using Add record. Getting this right before the next step is what prevents downtime.

Once you're satisfied your records are all there, continue.

3. Switch your nameservers

Velumi gives you two nameservers, for example:

alice.ns.cloudflare.com
bob.ns.cloudflare.com

Log in to the registrar where you bought the domain (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Loopia, etc.) and replace the domain's current nameservers with these two.

Every registrar's settings page is a little different, but you're looking for a section called Nameservers, DNS, or Name servers. Replace whatever is there with the two values Velumi gave you.

Because your records were already imported in step 2, your email and existing sites keep working through the switch.

Propagation

Once you've changed the nameservers, the change has to propagate across the internet. This is usually quick but can take up to 48 hours — it's controlled by your registrar and the global DNS system, not by Velumi.

You don't need to wait at the wizard. You can close it, attach the domain to an environment, and adjust DNS records at any time — everything takes effect automatically once propagation completes.

You can always find your domain's nameservers again later: open Domains, click the domain, and they're shown at the top of the page with copy buttons.
